Why is Beijing so bothered by Aging Rockers?

When that dreadful Icelandic singer Bjork made her “Tibet, Tibet” protest at her Shanghai concert earlier this year, Chinese officialdom was relatively restrained. Vice Minister of Culture Zhou Heping noted that the fey, shrieking one had “caused dissatisfaction among the broader Chinese audience” (believe me, they’re not the only ones) but stressed that it was an isolated case that wouldn’t “affect China inviting other countries’ artists from coming to perform.” This is treating a woman who dresses like an art student’s nightmare with the indifference she deserves.
But on the subject of musicians (and following on from Simon’s earlier post), it is puzzling that the release of Guns N’ Roses’ new album, Chinese Democracy, should be greeted with such regressive vitriol. I mean, the Communist Party-published Global Times actually believes that this plodding, over-produced chunk of dad rock is “venomously attacking China” and that 46-year-old Axl Rose—he of the girly braids and temper tantrums—and the rest of the band are turning a “spear point” on the country. Global Times? It sounds more like the Pyongyang Daily. And now access to the band’s website has been blocked.
Far better to have not reacted at all—but someone in the Chinese government is clearly laboring under the touching delusion that Guns N’ Roses’ utterances actually matter. It makes you look infantile, Mr Commissar.

Obama’s Afghanistan Problem: Neither Karzai Nor the Taliban Like the ‘Reconciliation’ Script

President Barack Obama huddled with President Hamid Karzai in Chicago on Sunday, urging Afghanistan’s leader to accelerate negotiations with the Taliban over a political solution to the longest war in America’s history. But the prospect for Karzai negotiating successfully with the insurgents is clouded by a question raised by Josef Stalin, on the eve of World War II, in response to the suggestion that he offer concessions to the Pope: “How many divisions does he have?” The Taliban now ask the same question about Karzai. And should the Afghan leader also ask himself the question, he might reach a similarly dispiriting conclusion. Karzai’s independent power base is minimal, as is his ability to influence the outcome of his country’s civil war absent direct U.S. involvement. And that gives neither Karzai nor the Taliban much incentive to cut a deal with the other.

Spillover - Lebanon’s Daily Star reports on escalating violence inside the country after soldiers shot dead a prominent anti-Bashar al-Assad Muslim preacher Sunday. “The gravity of the incident… prompted leaders on both sides of the political divide to call for calm and restraint to prevent the country from sliding into sectarian strife as a result of a spillover of the 15-month-old uprising in neighboring Syria,” it says.

To be fair, there is very little the Global Times does not regard as somehow antagonistic to China. I’ve started reading it recently as my Chinese has improved, and find it very interesting and quite nearly xenophobic. Axl Rose and the Global Times going at it is a bit like Bill-O inviting a Code Pink activist onto his show – just free publicity and nothing of substance.

    Liam,

I’m surprised to see you write that the ideas of an artist (and yes, I could have put air quotes around that word, given the circumstances) don’t matter. Axl Rose is no Thomas Paine or Harriet Beacher-Stowe, but artists and the ideas they float really do have an impact on their times.

Either way, by addressing G’n'R as they have, the Chinese have validated the confused and confusing lyrics of Axl Rose as worthy of engagement. Even if Rose’s lyrics didn’t matter before, they do now. Just as martyring a movement’s political leaders guarantees its empowerment, and censoring art ensures it an audience.

I make me sick to find out since again that those shameful Rockers had time after time used other nation’s political, social and ethnical problems as propaganda to increase their popularity thereby fame and fortune. As far as I am concern, those rockers should be arrested by the Chinese government and throw into jails for life or simply sentence to execution. In short, they are those who responsible to chaos our world is facing to and many of those musician are by no means idols or mentors to people. Their songs are mostly bad like abstract fine arts because those artists and musician simply do not have the educations, talents, techniques or skills to perform more advance instrument or understand musical scores like those people who were playing advanced instruments or singing classical music.

If that Icelandic or Island (in Danish language) rocker is White then she will obviously needs to defend their race of discrimination and mistreatment of Icelandic Eskimos or native American Indians.
