    Obama’s Afghanistan Problem: Neither Karzai Nor the Taliban Like the ‘Reconciliation’ Script

    President Barack Obama huddled with President Hamid Karzai in Chicago on Sunday, urging Afghanistan’s leader to accelerate negotiations with the Taliban over a political solution to the longest war in America’s history. But the prospect for Karzai negotiating successfully with the insurgents is clouded by a question raised by Josef Stalin, on the eve of World War II, in response to the suggestion that he offer concessions to the Pope: “How many divisions does he have?” The Taliban now ask the same question about Karzai. And should the Afghan leader also ask himself the question, he might reach a similarly dispiriting conclusion. Karzai’s independent power base is minimal, as is his ability to influence the outcome of his country’s civil war absent direct U.S. involvement. And that gives neither Karzai nor the Taliban much incentive to cut a deal with the other.

    “But will Chinese be so easily diverted?” Of course, they are. You can just read the posts here to know that they are willing to be diverted. No, they seek too be diverted. And they insist. And if the Chinese government media don’t do it for them, they do it themselves.

    John Smith is kind of a critic with sophistry and sympathy to Chinese people. But even if all the poster here agree with John S, it can not make any difference in China, but gratify his vanity only.

    john2008obama: giving weapons to Chinese won’t do a thing. First of all, they all want to be ruled by the CCP. They are happy that way. Why would they use weapons to do anything. Secondly, they are too timid to do anything about who rules them. Mongol, with a small (a few hundred thousand) army conguered the Hans with hundreds of million population, and an army of several hundred thousands. The manchurians did the same thing, with a lot of help from the Hans themselves, of course. Even during the 20th century, Japan toke over China with only a small army, again, with a lot of help from the locals. They didn’t lift a finger to do anything about it, until some overseas Chinese toke up the arms. And these overseas Chinese were ridiculed by the Hans to no end when they tried to organized the mainland Chinese to revolt.

    Thirdly, they won’t know how to use the weapons. They are no Uighur or Tibatan.

    So, your plan of sending them weapons is doomed to fail.

    I don’t know why the comment I left been deleted. Here I would like to say some words once again. Of course some “want to be ruled by the CCP” and “are happy that way”, because the CCP is able to supply everything they want, including money, special power, pretty girl, luxurious villa, etc.
