A Chinese Leader Talks Tough to Foreigners

From my colleague Lin Yang, a look at some comments made by Xi Jinping, one of China’s next generation of leaders, during a speech in Mexico:

There are few clues as to what will be the style of the man who will most likely be China’s next top leader, Xi Jinping. Until his debut in the Politburo last year, he was mostly known as the son of Xi Zhongxun, a funding father of the Chinese Communist Party. He has kept a low profile even after his appointment as the country’s vice president, and was never as popular as President Hu Jintao or Premier Wen Jiabao, who have their own official fan website.

This could change though, with a video of a speech by Xi to members of the overseas Chinese community in Mexico. Xi proudly reiterated that China has already made its biggest contribution to the world by feeding its own 1.3 billion population during the financial crisis, and warned that “there are a few foreigners, with full stomachs, have nothing better to do than try to be backseat drivers of our country’s own affairs.”

“China does not export revolution, hunger, poverty, nor does China cause you any headaches,” Xi said indignantly. “Just what else do you want?” (Here is one of the few websites that still have video of Xi’s speech; other mainland sites have taken down the footage.)

It is hard to reproduce the color of Xi’s speech in English, but Chinese netizens jumped on his language. “Someone with a full stomach and nothing better to do” is a derogatory term in Chinese used to describe disreputable characters who cause unnecessary trouble. “Boss Xi has set a good example for China’s foreign policy!” one commenter exclaimed in a news forum. “We are tired of the Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic condemnations and protests. We want more plain talk like that! It’s time for the foreigners to get a taste of our temper!”

“We would be overjoyed if this is really Xi’s own words,” another wrote. “We see hope in him! China should act tough, or it will always be bullied by others. Xi should also take actions to match his tough talk.” Xi’s style has also reminded many of his predecessors, “We see Chairman Mao in President Xi!”

A handful of blog posts suggested this might not be suitable talk for the president of a large nation in the 21st century. “We can see President Xi is a true patriot, but perhaps he could reconsider his phrasing when he’s touring foreign countries representing China,” wrote one commenter. “Such talk didn’t have to come from the president of a country,” another wrote. “China doesn’t have to condemn citizens from other countries for speaking their mind, not to mention some of their ideas and suggestions are good ones. You can’t control what others say, but you can always improve your own work. I am a bit disappointed in hearing this from President Xi.”

Obama’s Afghanistan Problem: Neither Karzai Nor the Taliban Like the ‘Reconciliation’ Script

President Barack Obama huddled with President Hamid Karzai in Chicago on Sunday, urging Afghanistan’s leader to accelerate negotiations with the Taliban over a political solution to the longest war in America’s history. But the prospect for Karzai negotiating successfully with the insurgents is clouded by a question raised by Josef Stalin, on the eve of World War II, in response to the suggestion that he offer concessions to the Pope: “How many divisions does he have?” The Taliban now ask the same question about Karzai. And should the Afghan leader also ask himself the question, he might reach a similarly dispiriting conclusion. Karzai’s independent power base is minimal, as is his ability to influence the outcome of his country’s civil war absent direct U.S. involvement. And that gives neither Karzai nor the Taliban much incentive to cut a deal with the other.

I am extremely glad that Xi talked this way. This shows how mature he really is as a leader of a major nation. He will be a great ally to the US and EU. US and EU should continue to ignore him so that he will produce more talks like this, and all problems of US and EU will just disappear.

Why is feeding your own people such a big contribution to the world?.

Probably because aid/donations and instability from a hungry populous of a billion people might cause some problems to the world.

“Why is feeding your own people such a big contribution to the world?.”
That’s because feeding of the 1.3 billion Chinese is a US responsibility which the US failed. If the US want people to have human rights, they should first fix the hunger. And the US should be extremely thankful to the Chinese leaders for helping US with such important tasks. And, of course, giving human rights to Chinese is a US responsibility too.

“Why is feeding your own people such a big contribution to the world?.”

Anyone from China knew why. Starting in 19th century, China descented into chaos due to repeated foreign invasion and civil wars. She lost control on her own territories and could no longer support its own population. That led to various issues such as Tibet, HongKong, Macao and Taiwan etc

Wstern people have a short memory because they don’t want to face their own recent colonial history.

“Starting in 19th century, China descented into chaos due to repeated foreign invasion and civil wars.” How did the foreigners invade China before China was strong, before “descent into chaos” ? If China was strong before the invasion, China, with a much larger army (some 400,000 just around Beijing, and much more in other parts of the country) than the invading forces (some 10,0000), should be able to beat them into a pulp. Hmm.. A big mystery only a Chinese can understand…

  • johnsmith9876

dzhuang: Don’t take me wrong. I think your version of history is totally correct. I just don’t understand the sequence of events.

  • johnsmith9876

Another historical mystery about the big job of feeding the Chinese people. Apparently, China was able to feed all Chinese in the early 1950′s. That’s only a few years after WWII. Some how, in mid 50′s, millions were starved to death. The westerners have left (or kicked out of) China by then. Was it the westerners’ fault that China was not able to feed Chinese ?

Of course, one must admit that all problems in China are caused by westerners, and all progress are due to the CCP.

Xi is frank. He directly told the world “I’m a rogue, whom should I fear?(我是流氓我怕谁?)”
In deed, which CCP comrade is not a rogue?

Mao, Zhou, Lin.. are not rogues. They are good communists. And they are all in great company of Marx. But these are the only communists who are not rogues.
