What to Expect When Sarah Palin Goes to India

Sarah Palin is going to India next month to speak at the 10th annual India Today Conclave, a high profile talk shop of ”global thought leaders” hosted in the Indian capital by one of the country’s leading magazines (its cover design is conspicuously similar to another newsweekly with a red border). Palin will be speaking alongside heavyweights such as Mohammed ElBaradei — at one stage, the figurehead of Egypt’s pro-democracy movement — feminist firebrand Germaine Greer, and the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Her speech, according to reports, is tentatively titled “My Vision for America.”

Televised adventures in Alaska notwithstanding, Palin is not known to be much of a traveler. I was on the scene in September 2009 when she delivered her first speech abroad, in Hong Kong, at a packed conference of bankers and fund managers. Those in attendance represented, according to that conference’s PR flaks, some $10 trillion in assets, and though no official figure came out, it’s safe to assume Palin commanded a six-figures speaker’s fee. Moreover, her address was strictly off-limits to the press, and so we grubby servants of the fourth estate had to chase desperately around the lobby of Hong Kong’s Grand Hyatt, seeking comments from pinstriped Masters of the Universe who had heard Palin speak. What we pieced together was… interesting.

Here are some highlights, from my report of the event.

She spoke of the Great Recession…

Addressing the financial crisis, she declared there was no need for new regulation: “Lack of government wasn’t the problem. Government policies were the problem. The markets didn’t fail. Government failed.”

… talked about her connections to Asia:

According to many delegates, Palin’s home state of Alaska dominated the talk. “She rambled on about the place for ages,” says an Indian banker with a major U.S. firm. “Palin even talked about Alaska’s land bridges with Asia and how animals once went across.” Based on a recording it reviewed, the Wall Street Journal says Palin invoked her husband Todd’s Eskimo heritage as a sign of shared “bloodlines” between the continents.

… and didn’t take many questions:

Though dubbed “a conversation with Sarah Palin,” the event turned out to be more of a monologue. She spoke for almost 90 minutes, all the way to 2 p.m., when the session was supposed to end. As an attendee said while walking out, “she clearly wanted to keep talking so there’d be no questions.”

In retrospect, it seems the Hong Kong speech was a kind of beginner’s level as Palin cultivates her political persona abroad. Insulated by a phalanx of business elites in a slick chrome and glass city that is ruled, ultimately, by authoritarian Beijing, Palin had the luxury of jetting in, checking into her suite at the Hyatt, and slipping away through back corridors surrounded by an officious security cordon. It’s unclear if she spent even a moment seeing any of Hong Kong’s tourist sites. In any event, no one in the city seemed to care — while Hong Kong’s foreign press corps ran around like headless chickens, few of the city’s prominent local tabloids even sent a reporter to cover the event.

That will probably not be the case in India, where its voluble media — especially its many English language 24-hour cable news networks and newspapers — have the resources and the interest to throw the proverbial full court press at Palin. It’s also hard to imagine India Today, a magazine, preventing other journalists from covering the event. Palin and her speechwriters will have to be prepared for the intensity of the media glare that falls on public figures in India. A lot of things can go very wrong for a foreign dignitary caught up in the heat of the moment. Just ask Prince Charles.

Netanyahu’s New Government: Warming to Peace Talks with the Palestinians?

A flurry of gestures toward the Palestinian leadership suggests that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his new role as leader of a center-right government, is warming toward the resumption of peace talks — or at least giving the appearance of warming; call it a rosy glow rising from a pair of announcements on Monday. One was about Palestinian prisoners who had been carrying out a mass hunger strike for weeks inside Israeli prisons. With several prisoners near death, Netanyahu approved an agreement that improves prison conditions and permits visits by family members in the Gaza Strip, the heavily guarded enclave that Palestinians have been allowed out of only for medical emergencies. Greeted by Palestinians as a victory, the deal eased concerns that a prisoner’s death might combust what are usually routine protests planned for Tuesday’s commemoration of Nakba Day, the “catastrophe” of Israel’s 1948 victory over Arab forces trying to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state.

Palestinians Mark Their Day of “Catastrophe”

Rebekah Brooks, Husband Charged in Phone-Hacking Scandal

The convoluted saga of the British phone-hacking scandal seems to have been dragging on longer than a back-to-back performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Yet despite the demise of Rupert Murdoch‘s News of the World, the launching of a public inquiry into British press standards, three police investigations and more than 40 arrests, the scandal has yet to draw real blood. The closest it has come was a report released this month by a Parliamentary committee, which accused Murdoch of turning a blind eye to the hacking at his paper and declared him “not a fit person” to run an international company — a damning conclusion that nonetheless seems to have had little immediate effect.

Thanks, Ishaan. I hope this blog will post lots of pix and videos of her + highly detailed threads of her stay. (And that you / other blog teammates reply to us nice readers often even with busy workloads; you can ignore the trolls. I’ll bet reporter / reader dialogues also drive up thread counts, great for ad revenues, no doubt.)
    .
Sarah would be wise to learn cultural details, get out in the streets (w/ security, of course) to meet / greet, try local foods, etc. …with LOTS of handholding and NOT stay insulated like in Hong Kong. The media treats her like a starlet but she will get torched if she royally screws up on this trip …FOX of course will treat her gently no matter what, but they don’t really count as a media source.

  • carotexas1

I suppose that it is not surprising that even on a global blog I would find a Sara story. LOL
Thank you Ishaan for adding some interesting points on her last overseas trip.
Do you think she will be able to escape answering reporters questions while in India?

  • Jyoti Thottam

Judging from the full-page ads in some of the Indian newspapers, this is going to be quite an event. But India Today is, in fact, doing its best to keep the rest of the rowdy media at bay. When we requested press credentials, the organizers insisted that only its own magazine and television reporters would be allowed access. But we intrepid New Delhi reporters will find a way to cover this. Stay tuned…

  • deconstructiva

Yep, we can’t escape Sarah anywhere, nowhere to hide. No wonder our friends back at swampland complain about her.

  • carotexas1

Jyoti, I wish you intrepid New Delhi reporters luck in getting access to Sarah Palin and actually have her reply to a not softball question.

  • Ishaan Tharoor

Thanks for commenting, deconstructiva. We look forward to the continued engagement of loyal, insightful TIME readers as this blog goes forward.

  • vstillwell

It’s going to cost 250 million dollars a day for her trip to India. There will be an aircraft carrier and hundreds of other navy ships and planes to support her visit. How can she do this when we’re in a recession and our government’s broke?

  • bojimbo26

    Well , when you`re reading from a script …………….. .

  • haigeonos

India’s media will be unbiased to Palin compared to American so-called journalists who have a stake in Obama regime and will obssessed in the personal destruction of Palin and her family.

  • powerpoultry

But, will Sarah be daring enough to wear Indian attire? Her slender figure is perfect for the sari and salwar kameez. The media would climb the walls, and photographers would leap & caper. The pictures would be priceless.

  • manofsan

    @deconstructiva,
That sounds like the typical knee-jerk leftist derision.

Let’s not forget that Indians are much better off with Republicans in the Whitehouse. The Democrats are the coalition of narrow special interests, including extraterritorialists who dominate its foreign policy agenda.
The most senior among their ethnic special interest groups tend to be European extraterritorialists. That’s why the more pragmatic Republicans have for quite some time had better ties with Asian countries than the Democrats have.

A Euro-centrist Democrat Whitehouse will only focus on pursuit of Atlanticism, with interest in Asia taking a backseat.

I much prefer Americans with a nativist America-first foreign policy in the Whitehouse, like George Bush (both Sr and Jr), and Palin fits that bill as well. Republicans are also bigger supporters of meritocracy and free trade, while Democrats are protectionists.

There is no point in letting oneself be led around by foreign interests – that goes not just for Americans, but also for Indians.

  • manofsan

I just hope that Indians don’t treat Sarah Palin the same way that Pakistani president Zardari treated her:

That just made me cringe when I first watched it.

  • cxyehonala

So you think that the Indians and Pakistanis are a bunch of sex-craved perverts ??

This kind of racist comment is very insulting to all the people in the Indian Subcontinent.

You just look at the behaviour of your own US President Bill Clinton before you start to insult the good people of Asia.

From Asia with contempt and disgust.

  • cxyehonala

It seems that mocking at the traditional costumes of the Indian people seems very funny to you.

OMG. She’s in India. Lets hope she doesn’t ask to talk to the Chief. She’s probably already wondering where all the teepees are.

Sarah Palin is an idiot. The drive by media needs to except this and stop covering her as though she has validity. FOOLS!

  • http://tisias.wordpress.com tisias

I can’t wait for her to finally visit an arab country

it will either give her an oppertunity to add clout to her unestablished foreign policy record, or reenforce to her opponents her hypocrisies and ineptitudes

  • http://conga.wordpress.com/ Mary

Will try not to insult anyone. Please forgive me if I do. I have followed Sarah Palin for several years since she came to the lower 48 of the U.S.A. I have observed her behaviours. The following is offered as an observation, not a diagnosis.

Palin plays the victim, never takes blame, she lies, she engineers the discrediting of others, she feels the rules are for others, but not for her, she acts like she is deserving of special favors, and she uses others, including her family, as tools. Interestingly, these are some of the characteristics of the sociopath as detailed in “the sociopath next door: The Ruthless Versus the Rest of Us,” by Martha Stoudt, Ph.D., Crown (2005) hardcover; Broadway (2006) paperback.

Palin is poisonous and manipulative underneath the patina of her polished exterior.

  • cxyehonala

Hey friend, India is no longer your White Man colony.

India is a free and independent country. It has a President and Prime Minister. It is not a barbaric tribe with a Chief.

  • amog

You, my friend, are a first rate idiot.

-Someone from India who understands English a little better than you do.

  • manofsan

    @cxyehonala,

Thanks for the self-righteous PC race-baiting response. FYI, my father was born in India and my mother was born in Pakistan. But like I said, I cringed when I saw the crude male-chauvinism emanating from Zardari as he tried to make light of Palin based on her looks.

And yet that would hardly concern American left-wingers who themselves prefer to mock someone because of her rural background, while lionizing Obama merely because of his skin colorand somehow imagining him to be the epitome of seasoned experienced decision-making. Hell, my skin’s darker than Obama’s and so his complexion doesn’t impress me that much.

  • manofsan

    @cxyehonala,

No, India is no longer a colony, and yet the living standards of its people haven’t gone up all that much. Poorer Indians like to say that at “independence” they exchanged their White sahibs for Brown ones. Unfortunately, that’s the legacy of India’s ruling Congress Party, which is always aspiring to turn India into a One Party State, where political opponents are vilified as “fundamentalists”, much like Hosni Mubarak’s regime did to its political opponents.

  • Gary P

Ishaan Tharoor, nice historical revision there.

When Palin went to Hong Kong and spoke, even the New York Times had glowing reviews, and did the Wall Street Journal and the London Financial Times.

Governors, who are doing their jobs, generally don’t do a lot of world travel. They are too busy doing their jobs, which Palin was quite good at. It’s why she had approval ratings in the low 90s and high 80s throughout her term as Governor.

Her overseas travel while she was Governor was limited to her role as Commander-In-Chief of the Alaska National Guard. She visited her troops in Kuwait in 2007 and in Kosovo in 2009. She also visited wounded troops in Germany both times.

Look for her to shine in India. She’ll be presenting a new and better direction for America, and the world.

AOL layoffs, high unemployment, inflation in India, weak economy in the USA, war south of Europe, oil rises – Why is Sarah Palin going to lecture in India? Sarah Palin’s trip to India will ruin US. The people of India will have no respect for her, but the visit will promote Julianne Moore new movie where Moore plays Palin. Sarah better watch out. Jealous much, with Sarah away Todd might find Moore interest in films.

Sarah Palin is a hypocrit. Usually that wouldn’t be a problem, but in the case of a U.S. representative trying to act as if she is Hillary Clinton, Israel and India should be off limits, especially is she is only traveling because she thinks it is a good opportunity to help her win the White House. If the majority of Americans laugh at her in the United States, how will it help when the international audience laughs at her in India and Israel? This makes Sarah Palin lethal to America’s business interests.

The GOP is scared. Republicans know Sarah Palin is seperating the GOP. Sarah Palin should remember Lloyd Bentsen. Lloyd Bentsen will be remembered for his interchange with Dan Quayle in their vice-presidential debate in 1988, in which Quayle, a Republican senator, compared himself to President Kennedy. Bentsen, a Democratic senator, replied: “Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.”

“Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton!”

Palin is a threat to business relations, diplomatic relations, not to mention that she makes the United States look weak – If not ignorant – Sarah Palin’s trip to Israel and India reminds me that she is a Pentecostal Evangelical Christian. Sarah Palin’s blessing against witchcraft was scene by voters across the Internet. Sarah televised her evangelism. Studying Sarah’s past in the fall of 2005, Sarah Palin was running for Governor of Alaska when a Pentecostal Christian minister from Kenyan named Pastor Thomas Muthee rebuked witchcraft when he prayed over Sarah Palin. She asked for this “protection”. Sarah Palin volunteered to be video taped. Pastor Muthee preached several times at Wasilla Assembly of God, Sarah Palin’s church for more than two decades. If Sarah Palin is hunting for witches. If she believes that non- Christians run this risk? Should Sarah Palin be preaching in India and Israel right now? Delware voters were surprised when Republican candiate for the Senate Christine O’Donnell came out as a self-proclaimed witch, but Christine O’Donnell was hand picked by Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin gave Christine her Tea Party backed endorsement to run for the vacant Washington DC Senate seat. Many GOP officials were angry because O’Donnell’s drama lost them the Senate seat where Republicans could have gained a majority in the Senate as they won with the House of Representatives. Sarah Palin was to blame. Christine O’Donnell’s quotes were used by comedians – As were Sarah Palin’s quotes.

Palin is afraid to face GOP members in a debate for President, so she decided to travel to India and lecture them on relations with China. She can’t take care of her own home in Wasilla. Ask Bristol and Levi. Todd Palin got caught in a police sting with a prostitute, but instead of talking about that, the media is concerned with Willow’s homophobic remarks made on a social media website. Palin had a stalker / writer move into the house next to her. Sarah Palin can’t take care of her property in Wasilla and now she is lecturing people on how to take care of problems in India, next Israel as Hamas fires into Israel like they did yesterday, then Palin goes on about U.S. action in Libya? What an extension? What arrogance? What poor parenting? When will Sarah Palin return home to face off in a debate with Huckabee, Romney, Gingrich, or Bobby Jindal? Tea Party, you wanted Sarah Palin to be your President. This is how she acts when she in not President. Tea Party, do you want her now? Do you want Sarah Palin speaking for you in Qatar, Argentina, Chile, Indonesia, or how about Japan, do you want Sarah Palin to help Americans avoid the fallout coming to the California coast from Japan? Sarah Palin had a problem with a volcano in Alaska. Do you remember what she did when that volcano threatened the capitol of Alaska? Sarah Palin quit as Governor and let Alaska deal with the issues without her help. She walked away from Alaska after they voted for her, because she promised to protect them as governor – Yet Sarah Palin quit. Walked away. And joined a book signing tour where she could lecture some more, and more, and more… Sarah Palin loves to hear herself speak, but now she is going to India, Israel, and other countries to speak on behalf of United States citizens. I don’t know about you, but Sarah Palin does not speak for me. I am an American citizen, American homeowner, American taxpayer, I have a bank account being compromised by bankers on Wall Street, but I don’t see Sarah Palin touching any of those hot button issues, because she CANNOT. Sarah Palin doesn’t have the knowledge, experience, or problem solving skills to deal with the real problems facing the United States of America. She couldn’t face off with Mike Huckabee.
