McCain Visits Rebels In Libya And Calls For Increased Support

Is Sen. John McCain’s visit Friday morning to the Benghazi strong-hold of Libya’s rebel forces a sign of creeping escalation in the conflict with strongman Muammar Gaddafi that may lead to eventual troop deployment by Western nations? Impossible to know at this point, of course, but events coinciding with McCain’s visit to opposition fighters he called “my heroes” does allow the question to be raised.

As an ardent and vocal backer the anti-Gaddafi rebels, it’s hardly surprising McCain made the journey to Benghazi to demonstrate his support of the opposition. Nor is it illogical he used that walk-about to renew his opposition to President Barack Obama’s decision to scale back U.S. military involvement in the air campaign against Gaddafi assets, and allow France and the UK to assume heaviest in that under NATO’s direction. But McCain’s calls for the U.S. and its partners to increase their support of and assistance to the Libyan opposition comes in the wake of earlier announcements committing  new assistance to Libyan rebels—and which could turn out to be the first step in wider escalation. On Thursday, Obama announced the U.S. would begin using drones to as part of its participating in anti-Gaddafi air strikes. On Wednesday, meanwhile, the UK, France and Italy all announced they’d be sending military officials to advise rebel commanders seeking to shape up their rag-tag fighters into an effective fighting force.

But those European liaison officials will not participate directly in battle situations, British, French, and Italian diplomats urged; nor will they be involved with the actual training of rebel troops—limitations set to avoid accusations of active Western involvement in the ground war on the anti-Gaddafi side. Meanwhile, though there is disagreement between allies as to whether the current UN mandate for Libya allows Western intervention to seek the defeat and removal of Gaddafi as an objective in the mission, there’s general agreement thus far that all additional measures currently being taken can not and will not lead to the deployment of ground troops down the road.

But can we be so sure? However noble the cause involved—and getting rid of thugs like Gaddafi and his ilk in order to give Libya a shot a democracy seems worthy indeed–escalation is a slippery slope that can  rob those who advance upon it  control of their actions and options. As a supporter of the Iraq adventure from the get-go, McCain should know better than anyone how seemingly short-term, slam-dunk military interventions can quickly bog down into open-ended slogs requiring additional commitment (ie. escalation). And as we saw in Iraq, there’s also the risk of that prolonged, stakes-raising war in Libya drawing jihadist fighters to the conflict to exploit the resulting chaos in any way they can.

And despite the soothing comments by officials the European military advisors won’t become party to what’s now a civil war (begging the question “aren’t they already doing that by being in Libya, and helping coordinate NATO air strikes on the Gaddafi enemy?”), a New York Times piece on Tuesday  notes how that, too, might morph over time. It quotes former British Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell warning against the liaison officers becoming  “a first installment of further military deployment”, and darkly reminds  that “Vietnam began with an American president sending military advisers”.

And that of course  is true—but may wind up being beside the point if preventing Gaddafi from storming back, crushing the rebellion, and inflicting unthinkable revenge on the entire population of Libya means that, sooner or later, the international allies will have to ratchet their efforts up, and fully, frankly intervene on the ground. That’ll be a judgment call if and when it happens, but Western leaders should stop pretending it will not, can not, could not ever come to that. McCain’s visit seems symbolic as a reminder that it could, unless decisive action to back the rebels short of that isn’t found.

Netanyahu’s New Government: Warming to Peace Talks with the Palestinians?

A flurry of gestures toward the Palestinian leadership suggests that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his new role as leader of a center-right government, is warming toward the resumption of peace talks — or at least giving the appearance of warming; call it a rosy glow rising from a pair of announcements on Monday. One was about Palestinian prisoners who had been carrying out a mass hunger strike for weeks inside Israeli prisons. With several prisoners near death, Netanyahu approved an agreement that improves prison conditions and permits visits by family members in the Gaza Strip, the heavily guarded enclave that Palestinians have been allowed out of only for medical emergencies. Greeted by Palestinians as a victory, the deal eased concerns that a prisoner’s death might combust what are usually routine protests planned for Tuesday’s commemoration of Nakba Day, the “catastrophe” of Israel’s 1948 victory over Arab forces trying to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state.

Palestinians Mark Their Day of “Catastrophe”

Protesters challenge Israeli troops in the West Bank while commemorating the Nakba, or “day of catastrophe” in Arabic, which marks the day when Israel declared its statehood in 1948—an act which forced thousands of Palestinians out of their homes and into a life of exile

Rebekah Brooks, Husband Charged in Phone-Hacking Scandal

The convoluted saga of the British phone-hacking scandal seems to have been dragging on longer than a back-to-back performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Yet despite the demise of Rupert Murdoch‘s News of the World, the launching of a public inquiry into British press standards, three police investigations and more than 40 arrests, the scandal has yet to draw real blood. The closest it has come was a report released this month by a Parliamentary committee, which accused Murdoch of turning a blind eye to the hacking at his paper and declared him “not a fit person” to run an international company — a damning conclusion that nonetheless seems to have had little immediate effect.

NATO May Send Military Advisers to Libyan Rebels

No longer will Libya be ruled by a warlord, it will be a land of many cultures, each protected by a small militia. Tourists and investors will be welcome to visit this oasis, they will be free to enjoy the hotels and sunshine or stake a claim to its rich natural resources.

“TRIPOLI, Libya A delegation of U.S. senators led by John McCain met with Libya’s leader Friday to discuss the possible delivery of non-lethal defense equipment.

The visit and Washington’s offer of military equipment was another sign of the improving ties between the former longtime adversaries.

‘We discussed the possibility of moving ahead with the provision of non-lethal defense equipment to the government of Libya,’ McCain said at a news conference….

McCain said, ‘ties between the United States and Libya have taken a remarkable and positive turn in recent years.’”

I am not a democrat or a liberal but it appears to me most Republicans are out of touch with reality.

Increasing taxes a little bit is a good idea on the very rich…pick a number and say over $500,000/year for a single taxpayer.

It is also a good idea to stay out of wars. Get our troops out of Afghanistan almost immediately and Iraq this year.

Do not put any troops in Libya and stop sending money to Pakistan.

Excuse me, he did not meet with Libya’s leaders they met with the opposition. I don’t know what John and the rest of the senators were trying to prove, we have enough problems at home. They could not even agree for this country for it’s survival and they are trying to solve a problem there? This country should be their focus. Who paid for this trip of leisure? These people are not our allies why are we even considering giving them weapons? Supplying weapons to people to overthrow a government? This stuff use to be done in secret covert action but now you can just add a title to it and it becomes acceptable. They never like the US and still don’t. Those flags being waved through the open windows were just to get what they want and add that to John’s ego and presto, they got weapons. How stupid are we. Are these not the same people that were dancing in the streets and god knows what when the Pan Am went down. When will we ever learn? Thank God he didn’t get elected President of the United States. Just a week ago congress could not and did not actually agree on a budget because we don’t have money to run the country. Cut benefits stop programs raise taxes. Well it’s time we bite the bullet as one comment was, and were the only choices they could come up with for the citizens of this country but when it comes to interfering with another countries affairs we all of a sudden have millions/billions to pour into something no one really has an understand of, not to mention knows what is really going on. But I guest we the citizens in this country are not really all that important verses the rest of the world. Eventually the voters will take note to what is going on and if you think there were changes in this past election? That was only a tip of the iceberg. Wake up America and see what your leaders are doing, their making a names for themselves at your expense.

If McClain wants to fight in Libya, he needs to get a gun and join up with the rebels. We don’t need to be fighting another war in the Middle East! We need to bring our soldiers home from Iraq and Afghanistan. We don’t need to be the world’s policeman anymore!!

Africa has lost the war for it’s independence, the fall of Libya is hugely symbolic, the Gaddafi regime was not perfect but it stood up and was counted in the struggle for decolonization of the continent. It was also a beacon of how you could have an African state that wasn’t infiltrated by Western terrorism or anarchy and could be prosperous and stable.

Welcome to the brave new world of human rights based wars: Yes the new emperors need to justify their invasions by alleging they are attacking human rights violators….that these trump the Supreme war crime, and that no matter how many THEY kill, its ok…They’ve got the bad guys; and will guide the miscreant state into the paths of economic righteous-mess.

That they can get away with this sh!t , win the support of left wing stooges like Louis Proyect, Jeff Blankfort, liberals like JuanCole, says a lot for the success of this strategy. Of course it wont work unless the media closely manages the public perceptions, and racist stereotypes kick in..But so far the western world has not condemned these atrocious frauds at all.

What President Barack Obama has done with the US attack on Libya is a shame before God. If I would have known that Barack Obama was a warmonger, I never would have voted for him. What we are witnessing through this action is the recolonization of the African continent by the American Empire and AFRICOM for the benefit of the corporate elite under the guise of humanitarianism. Simply stated , we have The Empires African American President murdering African people to take control of their oil supply for the benefit of the corporate elite.

Once again, we have a president that has started an unnecessary war for the benefit of the corporate elite and oil companies under the guise of humanitarianism. Libya was not a threat to the USA, has not attacked the USA, has not planned to attack the USA and was not an enemy of the USA. This is a stupid war. The USA will not benefit in any way from starting this unnecessary war and bombing the Libyans.

At a time when the country is on the verge of bankruptcy and there is no money for housing, no money for public schools, no money for teachers, no money for social programs, no money for healthcare, no money injured soldiers, and we experiencing the worst economic crisis since the great depression, why is it that these warmongers (Neocons and Leftist Interventionists like McCain, Hilliary Clinton and Now OBAMA )can always find more reasons to spend the taxpayers money on killing people and dropping million dollar cruise missiles on countries that were not a threat, then expect the taxpayers to foot the bill for rebuilding that countries infracstructure that was needlessly destroyed under the guise of helping them?

Anyone can see that this is humanitarian imperialism. Libya, as you know, has the largest oil reserves in Africa. The USA is not going to receive a single dime of the oil revenue from this military industrial misadventure. Only the oil companies, financiers and war profiteers and a few kick back receiving politicians are going to benefit from this military industrial misadventure. Prior to US meddling into the affairs of Libya , Libya had the highest standard of living of any country on the African continent, their citizens could go to college for free and every citizen had a house. Gadaffi’s recent plans to keep more of the oil profit for the Libyan people resulted in the EMPIRE demonizing Gadaffi and going on the attack by using the iron fist of militarism coupled with the velvet glove of humanitarianism(we have to save the poor defenseless rebels).

Gadaffi wanted to establish a United States of Africa and had a mission of unifying the African continent via the African Union which he heavily funded. The west colonizers couldn’t have this, as they would no longer be able to exploit and rape the natural resources of the African people. That is why ,according the John McCain, “Gadaffi must die.” When Gadaffi /Libya and the Ivory Coast refused to join AFRICOM and participate in the recolonization and militarization of their countries by the West, their leaders days were numbered.

We now have reports that the CIA has been in Libya for months at the request of our Interventionist warmongering African American president of the USA instigating regime change via propaganda and organizing the “rebels”, many of whom are members Al-Queda (Aren’t they supposed to be the enemy?). It in no way benefits the USA by removing Gadaffi from power. After the Imperialist humanitarians get involved and the US military via NATO take over the Libyans oil supply which will immediately be completely privatized for the benefit of the oil companies, we can expect the Libyan standard of living to drop tremendously.

Dropping cruise missiles on Libyans is not helping them. Murdering Libyans is not saving them. Stealing the Libyans oil and giving it to the oil companies to sell for a profit is in no way helping the Libyan people. All we are doing is hurting the Libyans and bankrupting the USA by participating in these military industrial misadventures. Our national debt is skyrocketing out of control paying for these totally unnecessary wars of aggression against countries who were not a threat so that oil companies and war profiteers can rape their oil supply and sell it to the rest of the world for profit and install an American Empire puppet as dictator in their country. The US citizens will never see a dime of these oil profits and the US national debt will continue to skyrocket out of control by participating in these misadventures. Foreign Interventionism is bankrupting this country!!!

In 2007 Senator Barack Obama stated, “The president does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.” This hypocrite did not forget this. He purposefully side stepped congress and went to the UN and NATO to proceed with this unnecessary war against the wishes of the American people and the United States Constitution Article 1, Section 8. Obama did this for the benefit of his puppetmasters, the corporate elite and oligarchs who financed his campaign and were responsible for putting him in office.

For the love of God, if their are any congressional representatives listening, please stop these interventionist warmongers by cutting off their funding. They are only using the US mililtary to take over Libya’s oil supply for the benefit of the corporate elite. They don’ t give a damn about the Libyan people whom they are cruise missiling to death, nor the Libyan infrastructure that they are destroying with these bombs ,and they sure has hell don’t give a damn about the American people whom they are bankrupting. This is about MONEY and the control of dwindling resources, under the guise of humanitarianism. Hopefully the the American people are not all suckers. Don’t believe the corporate controlled media /war profiteers and their warmongering hype. We have seen this before. We should not allow these warmongers and war profiteers to continue to bankrupt our country. The American people do not approve of this war.

    – What you need to understand is that your presidents don’t lead or decide or in any way run the country. They are merely PR representatives of what you describe as “the corporate elite”..
